A familiar and much loved site in zoo's and wildlife parks, in the wild these gentle giants are surprisingly rare.
Giraffes are classified by IUCN’s Red List as vulnerable of extinction. Recent surveys have confirmed the number of giraffes has plummeted 40% since 1985. With some subspecies, such as the reticulated giraffe, the situation is even more dire, with their population declining by nearly 80%.
Giraffes have no natural predators. However in a tale as old as time it is human interference and our insatiable appetite for self that is the problem. Loss of habitat from logging and farming pose the greatest threat to these amazing animals.
